The Short Answer
A delegate is a trusted person you designate to help settle your affairs when you pass. Think of them as a steward: someone who can step in on your behalf, access the information you've chosen to share, and make sure your wishes are carried out. Upon your death, they'll receive read-only access to your Paige plan.
A best practice is to assign at least two delegates. Having more than one means there's always someone available, and it distributes the responsibility so no single person carries it alone.
What Does a Delegate Actually Do?
Delegates can take on several important responsibilities in Paige, depending on what you've set up and shared with them.
- Access shared information now — Delegates receive read-only access to the documents, passwords, and other content you've specifically chosen to share with them now. They can view, but not edit, what you've shared.
- Trigger scheduled messages and memories — If you've created a message or memory set to "Delegates can trigger," your delegate can choose when to send it on your behalf. This can be especially meaningful for time-sensitive moments like birthdays, milestones, or personal farewells.
- Report a passing to gain full access — When you pass on, a delegate can log into Paige, navigate to Shared With Me, and select Report a Passing to begin the verification process. This is how they will unlock access to your full account.
What Does a Delegate See?
Delegates only ever see what you've intentionally shared with them until the account owner's passing is verified. At that point they will be given access to the user's account. Their access is always read-only, meaning they can view information but cannot make changes to your account.
Delegates do not automatically have access to everything in your account. You control what gets shared with them — so it's worth being thoughtful and intentional about what you assign.
Who Should You Choose?
Choosing a delegate is a personal decision, and it's worth thinking through carefully. A best practice is to choose people who:
- Know you well and understand your wishes
- Are organized, dependable, and available
- Have your best interests genuinely at heart
- Are prepared to take on some responsibility during an emotional time
This could be a close family member, a trusted friend, or even a professional advisor, there's no single right answer. What matters most is that you trust them, and that you've had a conversation with them about this role before assigning it.
It's a good idea to talk with your delegates before you assign them. This is a meaningful responsibility. Giving them a heads-up shows care and respect, and helps ensure they're ready when the time comes.
How to Assign a Delegate
You can assign a delegate from your Contacts page. When adding a new contact, simply check the Delegate checkbox or, for existing contacts, select Set as delegate from their row in your address book.
Once you assign someone, their status will show as Pending until they accept the invitation. They'll receive an email asking them to accept or decline the delegate role.

A Note on the Weight of This Role
Assigning delegates is one of the most loving things you can do inside Paige. You're not just organizing information — you're leaving behind a clear plan for the people who will need it most. When you choose your delegates thoughtfully and talk with them openly, you make an already difficult time a little easier to navigate.
Once a delegate accepts your invitation, their status in your Contacts will update from Pending to Delegate. You're all set.
Common Questions
"Can I have more than one delegate?"
Yes and it's encouraged. A best practice is to name at least two delegates. Life is unpredictable, and having a backup ensures your wishes can still be carried out if one delegate is unavailable.
"Can my delegate access my account right now, while I'm alive?"
Delegates can only access what you've specifically shared with them, and only in a read-only capacity. They can also trigger any messages or memories you've set to "Delegates can trigger." They don't have access to your full account unless a passing has been reported and verified.
"What happens after a passing is reported?"
Once a delegate reports a passing and the verification process is complete, full access to your shared content is unlocked. Verification may require documentation such as a death certificate, obituary, or burial permit.
"Can I remove or change a delegate?"
Yes. You can update your delegates at any time from the Contacts page. It's a good practice to review your delegates periodically — especially after major life changes.
